Boyd Remembrance 2009

I te hāngai o tēnei tohu whakamaharatanga,
ko te paenga o te Paera ki te tāhuna
i te taha Tonga Mauuru o Motuwai
i toro i te tau 1809
Kāore ana e au ahi
Ka pā he au moana, ka mate.
  Opposite this point
on the harbour bed lie the remains of
the sailing ship ‘Boyd’
burnt out in December 1809

In December 2009 the Whangaroa Community will be staging a Remembrance event marking the 200th anniversary of the so called “Boyd Incident”. This incident in which virtually all the crew and passengers where killed, occurred in the Whangaroa harbour, north of the Bay of Islands in Northland, New Zealand in 1809.

In March 2010 there will be another Remembrance event in the Bay of Islands to acknowledge Te Pahi and his people, who were attacked and killed supposedly for their involvement in the Boyd incident.

These tragic events resulted in the deaths of over 200 people both Maori and Pakeha.

E ngā maunga tapu, iringa kete kōrero,
e te mana o ngā uri o Whangaroa,
e te mauri o rātou kua riro ki tua.
Nā te ringaringa kaha o aitua, i tāhae.
Moe mai koutou, moe mai koutou,
e moe.
Koutou ki a koutou.
Tātou te kanohi ora, tēnā koutou,
tēnā koutou, tēnā tātou katoa.

We meet on holy ground.
For that place is holy
where we meet one another.
Where lives touch,
where love moves,
where hope stirs,
here is holy ground.
How strong our need is for one another
as we share life and death together.
